RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
