In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
