Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
